The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival takes placefrom April 13 to 22. This is Whistler’s annualcelebration of winter sports, music, arts and mountainculture.  During the 10 days and 10 nights prepare to be blownaway with amazing tricks in sporting competitions such as the BigAir event, incredible parties, awesome bands, DJ’s and muchmore.  There is a lot going on during the festival, so here isour list of the top 5 events not to be missed.

1. Big Air

The Big Air Competition is one of the most talked aboutevents at the festival. Watch pro skiers light up thenight and expect the atmosphere to be electric as this eventtypically sees a crowd of 15,000.  The competition takes placeon Saturday April 21 at the base of Whistler Mountain. Training starts at 7pm with the finals starting at 8pm.  Theawards ceremony will take place at 10pm.

2. Swollen Members

Each day from 2.30pm to 5.30pm there will be the freeoutdoor concert series at the Main Stage in the SkiersPlaza.  Vancouver and Victoria natives SwollenMembers, will be performing on Saturday April14th.  This hip hop group are a festival favouriteand will certainly impress.

3. Whistler Dogfest

What does a dog fest have to do with a ski and snowboardfestival? Not much, but why not! After all Whistler is ahuge dog loving community and dogs love living here too.  Thisevent is another festival favourite and is a kid friendly, petfriendly event.  Watch canines of all shapes and sizes paradethrough the Village Stroll on Saturday April 21st. All proceeds of this fun event go to Whistler’s local animal shelter (WAG).

4. Fashion Show

This will be the 7th year that the TELUSWorld Ski and Snowboard Festival celebrates the world offashion. This event takes place on Friday April20th at 8pm at the Whistler Conference Centre. Tickets are required. The runway will feature some of the edgiest,fashion-marries-function brands available.  The show willemphasize Whistler’s style scene both on and off the hill.

5. State of the Art

The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard is also a celebrationof art in this mountain town.  State of the Artshowcases up to 40 underexposed artists.  There will beapproximately 100 pieces of art, across a wide range ofmediums.  The gallery will be open daily during the festivalfrom 12pm to 6pm and is located in the Grand Foyer of the WhistlerConference Centre.  The cost of this event is free.

Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains have received 85cm(33in) of new snow in the last 72 hours.   Moresnow is in the forecast for the Whistler area for the rest of theweek with 20-35cm expected on Thursday. This is a great time tovisit Whistler and enjoy the rest of the Spring Break holiday, oreven book a trip for April.  The snowbase is at 355cm (138in)so conditions for spring skiing are looking amazing.

Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains hours of operationshave recently been extended. The lifts are now open from8.30am to 4pm with the alpine lifts closing earlier as usual.

1. Whistler Kid’s and Ride Tribe

The Whistler Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Schoolis one of the largest in the world and attracts topinstructors. Lessons are available for children aged 3years and up to 18 years.  During Discover Whistler Days(April 13 – April 22) you can save up to 30% on daily lessons andmulti day adventure camps.  Children of all ages will love thefacilities including a Magic Castle on Blackcomb Mountain andhidden Tree Fort on Whistler Mountain. Take of your skis andsnowboards and come explore these great outdoor adventure playlands.

2. Whistler Blackcomb Tube Park

The TubePark is located at Base II on BlackcombMountain.  This is a fun activity that everyone canenjoy – no experience required. The Tube Park has six to eightlanes varying in difficulty from green to blue to black. There is also a mini zone with mini-tubes for younger kidslooking to join in the fun. The Tube Park is open daily from 12noon (11am on weekends) until 8pm.  Access to the tube park iseasy by taking a free ride up the Excalibur Gondola from theWhistler Village base.

3. Stay in a Whistler Condo

4. Whistler Family Activities

Kids can receive up to 50 per cent off most Whistler activitieslike snowmobiling and sleigh rides.  There are also anumber of great free or almost free kid’s activities in Whistleravailable.   Make sure you spend an hour or two at theoutside wood carved jungle gym, just opposite the Whistler OlympicPlaza.  Kids will also love the outdoor ice skating rink inthe Whistler Olympic Plaza.  Just outside of the Village isthe Meadow Park Sports Centre which has an excellent kids poolcomplete with lazy river, slide and rope swing.

5. Family Friendly Whistler Restaurants

Whistler has many great restaurants and some greatoptions for families dining with children.  Werecommend making restaurants reservations ahead of time. Family favourite Whistler restaurants include Creekbread, The OldSpaghetti Factory, Caramba, Uli’s and Pasta Lupino.
