Whistler Events and Activities - April 2008

The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival celebrates 10 days of winter sport, fashion, film, photography and Canada’s largest free outdoor concert series to the resort. April also offers great spring skiing and snowboarding... especially with the outstanding snow conditions continuing in Whistler this season.

Whistler Events include...

Mom's Mountain Classic 2008 - April 3, 2008
Skiing and snowboarding moms and grandmoms of all ages. The day includes morning coffee, race practice, a match-time race, lunch and après festivities. The theme for this year's race is "Las Vegas". Register prior to the event day at any Guest Relations or Ski & Snowboard School sales locations or by calling the reservation centre at 1-800-766-0449.

Whistler Cup 2008

Sierra Wireless Whistler Cup - April 4 to 6, 2008
In its 16th year, the FIS-sanctioned Whistler Cup is the largest and most important ski race for athletes aged 11-14 years. Over 390 young athletes from 21 countries will be represented. For many young Canadian athletes, this is the first opportunity they have to meet and ski with the world’s best.

TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 11 to 20, 2008
The TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is a 10 day celebraton of music, arts, and sports. The Festival features Canada's largest free outdoor concert series, pro ski and snowboard competitions, inspiring photography, film and fashion showdowns, amazing nightlife, and much more.

Outdoor Concert Series – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 11 - 20 2008
Canada’s biggest free outdoor concert series offers headline acts and emerging artists. Music styles vary from rock, reggae, hiphop to indie funk. Featured performers include Michael Franti and Spearhead, the John Butler Trio, The Trews, Ill Scarlett, Daniel Wesley, De La Soul and Julian Marley.

Film Premiere "Seasons" – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 11, 2008
A mountain biking film, following seven of the world’s top mountain bikers Darren Berrecloth, Matt Hunter, Cam McCaul, Steve Peat, Andrew Shandro, Steve Smith and Thomas Vanderham through a year’s four seasons. Screening at the TELUS Whistler Conference Centre.

ORAGE MASTERS – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 11-13, 2008
ORAGE MASTERS combines a slopestyle course with a team-based free-for-all approach. This event features eight teams of four made up of the biggest names in New School skiing (one female and three male) battling head to head for the ultimate title.

Icon Gone – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 13, 2008
Storytellers compete against each other in a competition debating who is Whistler’s greatest icon. Presented in conjunction with the Whistler Museum and MY Millennium Place.

Filmmaker Showdown – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 15, 2008
Filmakers are given 72 hours to shoot, edit and produce a short film within 100 kilometres of Whistler. Winning films go on to screenings around North America and to television audiences in over 50 countries. The competition is open to amateurs and professionals, teams or individuals with prizes worth $15,000, including a camera and $2,000 cash.

Filmmaker Second Cuts Screening – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 16, 2008
A movie marathon event featuring all of the 2008 72 Hour Filmmaker produced shorts that came in on time. A exhilarating showcase with screening at the TELUS Whistler Conference Centre.

Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown – TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival - April 17, 2008
Five of the world's best lifestyle and action sports photographers compete in the eleventh annual Pro Photographer Showdown. Top prize of $10,000 will go to the 2008 crowned King of Photography and $1,500 will go to each of the runners up. Featuring photographyers are Dan Carr (Whistler), Blake Jorgenson (Whistler), Kari Medig (Vancouver), Jancsi Hadik (Verbier), Frode Sandbech (Norway).

Whistler BC backcountry

The North Face Canadian Ski Mountaineering Championships - April 19 - 20, 2008
An incredible combination of fitness and technical skiing skills challenge skiers. The course is 26 kilometres including over 2,100 metres of climbing will test the crowning of national champion. There is also a 10 kilometres course for recreational athletes wanting to try this exciting new event.

Whistler Events and Activities - March 2008

March in Whistler brings plenty of lodging options at great value for those looking to raise a pint for St. Paddy's Day or celebrate Spring Break and Easter on the legendary slopes of Whistler Blackcomb. Come up and make the most of this year's epic snow conditions - more than 25 feet of snow have fallen already, with Whistler's signature spring storms destined to bring even more great skiing. Skinny skiers are also making the most of the great snow in the stunning new Nordic facilities at Whistler Olympic Park, providing the perfect preview two years in advance of the 2010 Olympic and Paralymipc Games. And for those more inclined to just chill, there's always the alluring Whistler patio time. Remember to pack sunscreen!

Spring snowboarding

Showcase Showdown: Night Pipestyle Event
February 29 - March 1, 2008

$50,000 in cash and prizes including 20 Sapient snowboards are up for grabs at the annual Sapient-Showcase Showdown, now following a format dubbed "Pipestyle." The Pipestyle incorporates tombstones, rails, boxes and spines into Whistler Blackcomb's Super Night Pipe, creating a whole new style of halfpipe competition.

Charge of the Goddess March 1- 9, 2008 Ladies, leave the guys behind and get ready for some fun both on and off the hill during "Charge of the Goddess". Improve your skills in a relaxed, casual environment with Roxy Women's All Star Ski and Snowboard Camp, Roxy Women's Learn to Ski Camp and Burton Learn to Ride Camp. Afterwards, head out into the Village for a true girls' night of dining, dancing and laughing until it hurts.

Kokanee Valley Race Series March 6, 2008 No racing experience is required to join in on the fun of recreational racing. Open to skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders with different gender and age divisions, the Kokanee Valley race Series is held on Thursdays throughout the season. Pro categories are eligible for a cash prize at this fun and friendly ski series and everyone is eligible to win tons of great merchandise, including a weekly draw for a pair of Atomic skis. Competitors must be at least 19 years old to participate.

Traces of Emily Carr March 7, 2008 Presented by REAL CANADIAN in Whistler and Mascall Dance, Traces of Emily Carr: The Brutal Telling, is an engaging journey into the life of one of Canada's most celebrated artists. This creative, non-fiction dance piece uses Carr's vivid journals and published writing as source material and delves far into the recesses of her eccentric life to explore the personal drive and perseverance that informed her powerful art. The Vagina Monologues - A V-Day Presentation March 8, 2008 The Vagina Monologues won a 1997 Obie Award and was nominated for Drama Desk and Helen Hayes awards. The world tour of The Vagina Monologues initiated V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women. The Vagina Monologues is made up of a diverse group of women reading varied monologues encouraging female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality. Countdown to 2010 Paralympic Winter Games - Community Celebration March 12, 2008 Join the Whistler community to celebrate the two-year mark to the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Activities include the official community countdown cake, sport equipment displays, live performances, the Vancouver 2010 mascots and visits from local athletes. Adaptive Snowboard World Cup March 14, 2008 The Canadian Snowboard Federation and the World Snowboard Federation are pleased to announce the first ever Adaptive Snowboard World Cup will be held in Whistler. The competition will be run in a Snowboard Cross time trials format, with inspection, training, and two time trial runs. Prizes will be awarded to the top three women and men in their disability class. Adaptive Snowboarding athletes from Canada, USA, Europe, and New Zealand are expected to compete for a spot on the podium. Information: www.csf.ca

Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad March 22, 2008 Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad is a slap-shot romantic comedy presented by Arts Club Theatre. Donna and Teddy, both single parents, meet at the rink while watching their sons play minor league hockey. Atomic Ski & Snowboard Supercross March 22 - 23, 2008 The second of two Atomic Ski and Snowboard Supercross events is scheduled for March 22 and 23 on Blackcomb Mountain. Open to amateur skiers and boarders of all ages, participants enter training and timed seeding runs on day one, and compete in the Supercross races on day two. All competitors are eligible for great prizes, including a pair of Atomic skis. Helmets are mandatory.

Junior Freeride Competition March 29 - 30, 2008 The Junior Freeride Competition is Whistler Blackcomb's original big mountain competition designed just for kids. Separate classes for boys and girls, 10-13 and 14-17. Helmets are mandatory and mouthguards are recommended.
