Whistler Road Report - July 11 2009

Alpine Paving will be continuing the Highway 99 Whistler Improvements Project along the Sea-to-Sky corridor on the south end of Whistler. As the Municipality of Whistler’s fire regulation restrictions have been lifted, the hours of work for the project have been reverted back to the regular hours for the contract. Daily construction will now commence at 8:00 am, Monday to Saturday.

Please Note:
In the event that the fire regulation restrictions are reinstated, an update will be forwarded to stakeholders to advise them of the changes in the hours of construction.

The following is the construction schedule and associated traffic control measures to be implemented:

Week Of: July 13 to July 18

Scheduled Work Activities:

Hydro duct line and waterline installation along east side of Highway 99 (adjacent to the northbound travel lanes) between Brio to Whistler Way;
Gas line relocation on the west side of Highway 99 (adjacent to southbound travel lanes) at the Lakecrest Pond area;
Rock excavation, drilling, and blasting for hydro duct installation along east side of Highway 99 (adjacent to the northbound travel lanes) in the Bayshore Drive area;
Shoulder reconstruction and paving works on the east side of Highway 99 (adjacent to the northbound travel lanes) between Lake Placid Road and Whistler Road;
Retaining wall construction on west side of Highway 99 (adjacent to southbound lanes) at Nordic Drive area;
Shoulder widening works (i.e. barrier removal, saw-cutting, and excavation activities) on the west side of Highway 99 (adjacent to the southbound travel lanes) between Function Junction and Alta Lake Road;
Shoulder reconstruction and paving works on the east side of Highway 99 (adjacent to the northbound travel lanes) between Bayshore Drive and Spring Creek Road;

Traffic Control Considerations:

Monday to Saturday, 8:00am to 5:00pm: Short sections of lane shifts / diversions along the length of the work area with less than 5-minute delays for traffic control personnel assisted truck access and egress;
Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 1:00pm / Friday, 9:00am to noon: Short sections of single lane alternating traffic patterns along the length of the work area with less than 15-minutes delays for off-loading materials and pouring concrete / backfill material;
Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 1:00pm / Friday, 9:00am to noon: Intermittent short duration stoppages resulting in a 15-minute delays for blasting procedures in the Bayshore Drive area;

Week Of: July 20 to July 25

Scheduled Work Activities:

Retaining wall construction on west side of Highway 99 (adjacent to southbound lanes) at Nordic Drive area;
Shoulder reconstruction and paving works on the east side of Highway 99 (adjacent to the northbound travel lanes) between Function Junction to Lake Placid Road;

TELUS conduit installation crossing Highway 99 at Alta Lake Road intersection;

Traffic Control Considerations:

Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm: Various lane closures / diversions on Highway 99 and Alta Lake Road with less than 5-minute delays for traffic control personnel assisted truck access and egress;
Please Note: All existing turn movements at the Highway 99 and Alta Lake Road intersection will be provided at all times.

Upcoming Work Advisory

Please be advised that commencing within the next two weeks, Alpine Paving will begin the grade reduction roadwork at Nordic Hill. This phase of the contract entails placing road sub-grade on Highway 99 between Nordic Drive and Hillcrest Drive. Due to the significant potential impacts to the traveling public, Alpine has decided to complete the work between the hours of 11:00pm and 6:00am. During the scheduled work window, the permissible delays / closures include 30-minute delays during the entire shift (11:00pm to 6:00am), and temporary full closures from 3:00am to 5:00am, Monday to Friday. As Alpine Paving approaches the commencement date, further details will be provided regarding the temporary closures / traffic delay impacts to the public.

During the hours of work, construction speed zones will be in effect so remember - traffic fines double in work zones – so please slow down!
