Whistler Road Report - July 24 2009 - Special Update

Highway 99Alpine Paving will be continuing the Highway 99 Whistler Improvements Project along the Sea-to-Sky corridor on the south end of Whistler.  The Municipality of Whistler’s fire regulation restrictions have been reinstated and increased to the “Extreme” hazard level.  Therefore, construction within the interface – within 30 feet of the trees / underbrush – is not permitted at any time.  Only construction outside of the interface is permitted at this time.  As an early start time allowance for the project was to accommodate the 1pm finish time during the “High” hazard level, the hours of work for the project have been reverted back to original hours for construction - daily construction will now commence at 8:00am, Monday to Saturday.

(Please Note: In the event that the “Extreme” fire regulation restrictions are lifted, an update will be forwarded to stakeholders to advise them of the changes in the hours of construction.)

**Upcoming Work Advisory**

Please be advised that commencing within the next two weeks, Alpine Paving will begin the grade reduction roadwork at Nordic Hill.  This phase of the contract entails placing road sub-grade on Highway 99 between Nordic Drive and Hillcrest Drive.  Due to the significant potential impacts to the traveling public, Alpine has decided to complete the work between the hours of 11:00pm and 6:00am.  During the scheduled work window, the permissible delays / closures include 30-minute delays during the entire shift (11:00pm to 6:00am), and temporary full closures from 3:00am to 5:00am, Monday to Friday.  As Alpine Paving approaches the commencement date, further details will be provided regarding the temporary closures / traffic delay impacts to the public.

In addition to the night work scheduled by Alpine Paving for the Highway 99 Whistler Improvements project, BC Hydro may begin pulling cable for the newly installed hydro poles along Highway 99 over the next few weeks.   This work, which is yet to be confirmed with BC Hydro, will require various lane shifts / diversions and may be completed during nighttime hours to minimize the impact to traffic flows through the area.  This work is not associated with the Highway 99 Whistler Improvements project.  However, as the work is taking place within the construction limits, we wanted to take the opportunity to notify you of the additional works.

The following is the construction schedule and associated traffic control measures to be implemented:

Week Of: July 27 to August 1

Scheduled Work Activities:

  • Retaining wall construction on west side of Highway 99 (adjacent to southbound lanes) at Nordic Drive area;

Traffic Control Considerations:

  • Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 1:00pm / Friday, 9:00am to noon: Short sections of single lane alternating traffic patterns along the length of the work area with less than 15-minutes delays for off-loading materials and pouring concrete / backfill material;

Week Of: August 3 to August 8

Scheduled Work Activities:

  • Retaining wall construction and road grading on west side of Highway 99 (adjacent to southbound lanes) at Nordic Drive area;

Traffic Control Considerations:
