Whistler Resort Wins Prestigious Award from Australian Magazine
Whistler named "Best Overseas Ski Resort" in
prestigious Australian Travel Magazine for third year running
December 2006, Whistler, BC
For
the third year in a row, Whistler has been named the "Best Overseas Ski Resort" in Australia's esteemed
Luxury Travel Magazine's "Gold List", to be published in the January 2007 issue.
The awards are the result of a survey in which tens of thousands of the magazine's subscribers and readers
were asked to nominate the world's best hotels, resorts, spas, cruise lines, golf courses, airlines and
destinations - a total of 22 categories in all, according to a Luxury Travel Magazine news release.
"It's a three-peat for Whistler and we couldn't be more thrilled," said Karen Goodwin, Director Sales,
Tourism Whistler. "Whistler has long been a favourite winter destination for Australians, but to be named
number one in such an influential publication is truly an honour."
Goodwin added that Australians tend to appreciate Whistler's relatively temperate coastal climate, as well
the variety and vastness of mountain terrain, wide range of accommodations, restaurants and pubs, shopping,
spas and high service standards.
Also in the top three were Aspen, USA at number two; followed by Queenstown, New Zealand.
"Our survey shows that Australians really are among the world's great travelers and increasingly discerning
when it comes to recognizing true luxury and style," said Hilary Doling, Editor in Chief of Luxury Travel
Magazine.
The award comes on the heels of Australia's Today Show recent live broadcast from Whistler. The leading
morning news and current affairs featured Whistler in six daily weather segments shot on location over
two days, and a variety of pre-taped travel segments showcasing a wide range of Whistler's winter season
activities, services and amenities. The three-hour, weekday morning show, which airs in both Australia
and New Zealand, reaches more than two million viewers per week.
Whistler is a year-round leisure and meeting destination located 120 kilometres (75 miles) north
of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and is site of the alpine, Nordic, sliding and Paralympic venues
for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Whistler has a range of accommodations totaling 3,200
hotel rooms, and more than 5,000 other tourist accommodation units including condos, B&Bs and chalets.
