Mountain Opened November 18 with Mid-Season Conditions
WHISTLER, BC, November 18, 2006 - Massive winter storms that have blanketed Whistler resort since late
last week resulted in Whistler Mountain opening earlier than planned today, Saturday, November 18. The
mountains have received over 250 centimetres of snow since November 1, and the snow base at the mid-mountain
weather plot on Whistler Mountain measures 130 centimetres deep. Approximately 7,000 eager skiers and boarders,
primarily from Whistler, Vancouver and Washington, flocked to the gondola bases this morning - some as
early as 4:30am - anxious for the season to kick off.
"The two and a half metres of snow that has fallen over the past couple of weeks has made this one of the
best opening days in years," says Stuart Rempel, Whistler Blackcomb's senior vice president of marketing
and sales. "We've got mid-winter conditions, six lifts, and over 1,000 acres of terrain open. People are
having a great time - it's a fantastic start to the season."
Weather forecasters such as Bestskiweather.com are predicting that this is just the beginning of a period
of snowy, stormy weather over the next several days in the resort. Heavy snow is expected through Wednesday
ensuring incredible conditions for the upcoming US Thanksgiving weekend, traditionally a busy time for
the mountain resort.
Whistler Mountain is now open daily, and Blackcomb Mountain will open this Thursday, November 23. Whistler
Blackcomb's newest addition, the Symphony Express will open up in the back bowls of Whistler Mountain on
December 16. The new high speed detachable quad lift, part of a $22.1 million upgrade at Whistler Blackcomb,
will usher in a whole new chapter of lift-accessed alpine terrain on Whistler Mountain. Providing lift
access to 1,000 acres of terrain in an area that offers vast bowls, deep snow and gladed sub-alpine tree
skiing to skiers and riders of intermediate ability and above, the Symphony Express also offers awe-inspiring
views into Garibaldi Provincial Park and across to Blackcomb Mountain.
Skiers and riders eager to keep an eye on Whistler Blackcomb as this current storm cycle continues.
