MIKE DOUGLAS “EMBEDDED” ON WHISTLER MOUNTAIN FOR SIXDAYS
“Godfather of freeskiing” documents behind thescenes opening of Whistler Blackcomb earlyopening.
Mike Douglas “The Godfather of Freeskiing,” is currentlyEMBEDDED onWhistler Mountain for six days, documenting the insidestory as Whistler Blackcomb prepares for its early opening.
Armed with only his camera equipment and wintergear, Douglas is living solo in the patrol hut atop theiconic Peak Chair at 7,160 feet on Whistler Mountain. He’ll beproducing a series of short videos that bring to life the behindthe scenes work that goes into opening a world-class ski area forthe season. Douglas will be EMBEDDED with Whistler Blackcombsnowmakers, groomers, patrollers, and lift operations teams as theymobilize in preparation for Friday.
“Good things seem to come to those who wait. Asthe snow falls on Whistler Blackcomb, we all want to be up there assoon as possible, which is an exercise in patience,” says Douglas,co-founder of award winning film crew Switchback Entertainment.”After a long wait, I’ve finally made it up Whistler Mountain andit’s so good! The morning views have been spectacular and there islots of snow up here. This is a once in a lifetimeopportunity.”
Epic Amounts of Early Season Snow
With a snow base of 55 centimetres at Pig Alley (1,650metres), Douglas could be in for a few exclusive ski lapswith patrol as they prep the mountain to safely open for thepublic. There will be no general public access to the alpineterrain on November 18, as early season conditions still apply.
As much as 35cm of snow expected by Friday andDouglas could experience one of the raging storms that frequent thePeak of Whistler Mountain each winter; frequently clocking winds ofmore than 100km per hour. The EMBEDDED story has only begun.

Whistler Blackcomb has recently announced that WhistlerMountain will be opening this Friday November18th! Opening day has come 6 days early! Blackcomb Mountain will be opening on November 24th.
This is exciting news for all skiers and boarders whoare anticipating the start of the season. Whistlerand Blackcomb Mountains have received more snow over theweekend. The forecast is calling for another storm cycle tohit the mountains on Wednesday. This will bring a predicted35 cms of white gold to the mountains before opening onFriday! The early season ski conditions are going to bephenomenal!
In addition to all the snow that Ullr has beenbringing, the Whistler/Blackcomb snowmaking departmenthave been very busy. The snowmaking team has turned over 50million gallons of water into snow so far this season.
Whistler Mountain will open at 8:30am and close at3pm. You can upload from the Creekside Gondola andthe Whistler Village Gondola. Lifts opening will be EmeraldExpress, Big Red Express, and Franz’s Chair.

Let it snow, let is snow, let it snow!
Whistler Blackcomb is rapidly getting ready for a greatopening of the 2011-12 ski and snowboard season! Theresort has a planned opening for November 24. As of last week, thebase at Pig Alley (1,650 meters on Whistler Mountain) was at 52centimetres deep and the snow keeps following.
